Digital Assistants in Collaborative, Creative Teams – State of the Art and Future Research Directions

Collaborative creative teams have been a key driver of innovation and value creation in organizations and are a subject of information systems research. In recent years, digital assistance systems have increasingly moved into the focus of research to support collaborative, creative teamwork, because of technological advances. Nevertheless, there are still several knowledge gaps that should be addressed by researchers. One of these gaps is the question of how collaborative, creative teams can be supported in their collaboration and innovation processes by digital assistants.

The workshop addresses (post-) doctoral researchers and professors who are interested in (1) creative collaboration in teams and/or (2) digital assistance systems, chatbots and human AI interaction.

The first target group deals with collaborative, creative processes and teamwork. Relevant topics include methods and approaches to support creative processes (e.g. Design Thinking), digitalization of (distributed) collaboration, challenges in creative team processes and improvement of teamwork (e.g. increasing motivation, creativity, productivity).

The second target group deals with digital assistance systems and conversational agents. Relevant topics here include the conception, design, and implementation of digital assistance systems for different contexts. Digital assistance systems can take on different roles, e.g. in moderation, as team member or for administrative support. Furthermore, we welcome the participation of researchers interested in the design and outcomes of text-based and/or speech-based conversational agents in different scenarios (e.g. sales, marketing, HR, customer service).

In this workshop, we invite interested researchers from both target groups to discuss potential links between the two topics, highlight the current state of research and jointly develop an agenda for future research on digital assistants in collaborative, creative teams.

Interested researchers should send an e-mail to bittner@informatik.uni-hamburg.de to register for the workshop. In the e-mail, please indicate in brief which expertise (e.g. relevant publications and research projects) the participant can bring to the workshop. Based on the registrations and the respective expertise, we will prepare possible topics for the small group breakout sessions.

We plan to publish the results of the workshop in a follow-up article in the journal Communications of the AIS. Interested workshop participants are invited to participate in the further development of the workshop report.

 


Format of the workshop

We are planning a full-day workshop, which is divided into different parts.

• Getting to know the workshop participants and introduction to the topics

• Dividing into groups and working on different topics in small groups

• Lunch break

• Discussion in the whole group and consolidation of the results of the small groups

• Summary of the workshop and next steps
